• Sargi — before sunrise. Dubai sunrise on the working figure is around 6:24 a.m. GST. Eat sitting down. This is not a snack in a car park. The fast that follows will run through a full office day.
• Nirjala or as the family already keeps it — from sunrise until the moon is sighted. Fourteen hours is a common length this year. People with diabetes, pregnancy, a night shift that already empties the body, or a physician's instruction should eat. The vrat is not a prize for fainting.
• Sunset — around 5:41 p.m. GST on the working figure. The evening puja sits after sunset, before the moon, in the pradosh of the house: karwa, sieve, the lamp, the story if the house still tells it.
• Moonrise in Dubai — around 8:25 p.m. GST on the working figure I am using. Sighting follows, horizon and haze permitting. Abu Dhabi and Sharjah are within a few minutes of that. Confirm on a panchang set to your city the same afternoon. Do not subtract ninety minutes from an Indian time and call the result a Dubai moon.

Thursday is not the UAE weekend. Sargi at 6 a.m. and moonrise after 8 p.m. means the fast walks through traffic, a desk, a site, a hospital corridor. Plan the morning meal as if it were the last until night. Plan the evening so the puja is finished before the wait for the moon begins, not so that the wait is spent looking for the thali.

GST, IST, and the screenshot that makes you late

Gulf Standard Time is one and a half hours behind India. The moon does not rise in Dubai when it rises in Delhi, and the clocks are not the only reason. Longitude is. A moonrise of 8:17 p.m. IST in Delhi is not 6:47 p.m. GST in Dubai. Both errors are common. Both are avoidable.

If the vrat is in Dubai, the sky is Dubai's. A live aarti from India at '7:30 p.m. IST' is 6:00 p.m. GST — often still before the house lamp should be the first light, often before the puja window. Wait for Dubai's sunset. Wait for Dubai's moon. A photograph of a moon over Uttar Pradesh is not arghya in Jumeirah.

Sargi before a working Thursday

Sargi is the pre-dawn meal, often prepared the night before by the mother-in-law in the older household, and by whoever is awake in a Dubai flat. Then begin the fast at sunrise, not at 4 a.m. because a reel said the earlier the better.

If you leave the house at 7 a.m. for a site in Jebel Ali or a desk in DIFC, sargi is the difference between a vrat and a collapse at noon. Carry water if your family already allows it; many Karwa Chauth fasts are nirjala, and many houses have already softened that for work. Keep the form the body can finish. A vrat abandoned at 2 p.m. in a clinic is not stricter than a vrat that took water and reached the moon.

The evening cloth in an apartment

The karwa is an earthen or metal pot. The sieve is the filter through which the moon is first seen, then the husband if he is in the room. The lamp is ghee or oil, not a scented candle bought for photographs. Sindoor, rice, a few sweets, a dupatta the house already owns. That is the seat. A rented tower will not always allow a row of diyas on a balcony railing. One watched flame on a metal plate is a puja. A corridor aarti that blocks a fire exit is a fine.

The katha, if the house still tells it, is told after the puja and before the moon. It is not a film. It is not a threat. A woman who has never heard the story and still keeps the fast with a lamp has kept more of the day than a house that played a two-hour video and never looked up.

When the moon is haze, and when the husband is not in the room

Dubai in late October can give you a clear evening or a dusty one. Towers eat the horizon. Calculated moonrise is not a guarantee of visibility. Wait a little. Move to a window that faces the rise. If the moon is not seen and the family priest or the elder you already trust says to offer arghya at the calculated time and then eat, that is a sitting. Inventing a second fast until midnight because the sky was yellow is not piety. It is exhaustion.

The husband may be on a night shift, in Abu Dhabi while the vrat is in Sharjah, in India, on a flight, or in a marriage that is already strained. The sieve looking at the moon is the rite. The sieve then looking at a face is the household form when that face is there. A video call can carry a face. It cannot carry a moon. Do not delay arghya in Dubai until a moon in Lucknow has been photographed. Do not refuse food until a man who is asleep in another timezone wakes up. Name the sky you are under.

A first Karwa Chauth after marriage is often heavier than the tenth. The pressure is social, not planetary. There is no yog in the kundli that awards marks for a first-year faint. If the body cannot keep nirjala, keep the lamp and a satvik meal, and say so without theatre.

What Karwa Chauth in Dubai is not

It is not a guarantee of a husband's years, a pregnancy, a visa, or a reconciliation. I will not write those sentences. The vrat is a household act of sitting with a marriage for one Thursday. • Around 8:25 p.m. GST: moonrise. Sight, arghya, then food. If the moon is late behind a tower, wait with the lamp, not with a panic.

If two women on the same floor keep different family forms — one nirjala, one with fruit, one waiting for a husband on a screen — they can still sit together. Completeness is per house, not per corridor.
