Navratri puja in Dubai 2026 — a kalash in a flat, nine nights that will actually happen

Navratri puja in Dubai 2026 — a kalash in a flat, nine nights that will actually happen

Published: 18 September 2026 · Acharya Krishna Kant Shrimukh Shandilya Ji Maharaj · 8 min read

Navratri puja in Dubai is the same nine nights as in a courtyard in Sultanpur: a kalash, a lamp, a short recitation, kanya puja on Ashtami if the house can manage it, Dashami when the water goes to a plant. What changes is the room, the weekend, the neighbours, and the sky the tithi is counted under. Families write from Jumeirah, International City, Al Nahda, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi asking whether Ghatasthapana 'counts' in a rented flat, whether they must join a community garba to have kept Navratri, and whether nine colours from a mall are the vidhi. The Devi Mahatmya does not name a city. It names a sitting.

I am writing this on 18 September 2026, three weeks before Sharad Navratri. On the working panchang I use, the nine nights run Sunday 11 October to Monday 19 October 2026. Ghatasthapana is the morning of the 11th. Maha Ashtami is 18 October, Navami 19 October, Vijayadashami — Dussehra — Tuesday 20 October. Pitru Paksha ends Saturday 10 October; the kalash is set the next morning. A separate article on this site covers the nine names and the all-India fortnight. What follows is what changes when the house is in the UAE.

2026 dates a Dubai household can put on the fridge

Panchang shifts a civil date by a few hours from city to city. Confirm Dubai's sunrise and Pratipada before you lock the first morning, then keep that one calendar for all nine nights. Do not switch on day five because a second website looked nicer.

  • Sunday 11 October 2026 — Pratipada, Ghatasthapana, Shailaputri. Set the kalash in the morning if you can; the same evening if you cannot.
  • 12–17 October — Brahmacharini through Kalaratri. Lamp each evening. One page of the Devi Mahatmya, or the names, or a recording if the house is exhausted.
  • Sunday 18 October — Mahagauri, Maha Ashtami. Kanya puja in much of the north; sandhi in Bengali houses, timed from the local tithi, not from a television in India.
  • Monday 19 October — Siddhidatri, Navami. Last evening at the kalash.
  • Tuesday 20 October — Dashami. Visarjan of a small murti if you installed one; javara cut if you grew it; kalash water on a plant. Ravana only if that is already the form your circle keeps.

Friday and Saturday are the weekend for most of the UAE. The garba nights that fill a hall will be Friday 16 October, Saturday 17 October, and the Ashtami–Navami stretch into the 18th which is a Sunday. A sitting that asks people to arrive at ten on a working Wednesday will be a puja the host keeps alone.

Ghatasthapana in a Dubai flat

Without the kalash the nine nights have no seat in the house. North-east if the flat already uses that corner; otherwise a clean raised place that will not be kicked by a suitcase. Water, a coconut, mango leaves if the market has them that week — and if it does not, say so in the sankalp and use what the city sells. A scented candle is not a lamp. Barley in a clay dish, kept moist, is javara; many North Indian homes grow it and cut it on Dashami. A rented tower in Dubai will not always let you keep wet soil on a windowsill. You have not failed Navratri. You have skipped a regional custom. Light the lamp.

Tell the building. Volume after ten, a fire exit that must stay clear, a cooking restriction in some towers — these are the conditions under which the nine nights will be allowed to finish. Ask the building before you ask the colour chart. A tithi that looks perfect and gets the aarti stopped at 9:30 is a worse tithi than the next evening the corridor will tolerate.

Time: GST, IST, and whose tithi you are under

Gulf Standard Time is one and a half hours behind India. A sankalp named in IST while the family is sitting in Dubai names the wrong hour of the wrong sky. The tithi is local. If the puja is in Dubai, the panchang is Dubai's. A live recitation from India at '7:30 pm IST' is 6:00 pm GST — useful for a school-night sitting, useless if you thought you were matching a temple clock in Varanasi. Evening garba in Dubai is late evening in Uttar Pradesh. Do not run a children's kanya puja at an hour that is bedtime in one country and prime time in the other without saying which clock the room is using.

WhatsApp is how a consultation is booked, in English or Hindi, with the city named. There is no online payment on this site. Dakshina, if a sitting or a recitation is arranged, is spoken before the date is fixed.

Garba, Durga Puja, the kalash — one fortnight, three rooms

A Gujarati night of garba in a community hall is not a failed home puja. A Bengali household that keeps sandhi on Ashtami–Navami is not a failed kalash. A Hindi-belt family that lights the lamp and feeds a child on Ashtami has kept more of the book than a family that bought nine outfits and attended no sitting. Dubai puts all three in one city, often in one building. Keep the form the house can finish. Visit the other as guests, not as inspectors.

The nine-colour shopping list is a recent bazaar custom. The Devi Mahatmya does not contain it. A clean garment and a lamp will do. I will not publish a mall itinerary and call it vidhi.

Ashtami in an apartment: kanya puja without a courtyard

Kanya puja is inviting girls, washing feet, feeding them, honouring the Devi as child. It is not a talent show and not a bribe for a wish. In a Dubai flat, two or three children from the same floor are enough. If no kanya is available, offer the food at the kalash and feed whoever is hungry in the house. The hungry are not a lesser Devi. People with diabetes, pregnancy or a night shift should eat. The Devi Mahatmya does not award marks for fainting.

Sandhi puja, at the join of Ashtami and Navami, is timed from the local tithi. If you are not in that tradition, do not invent a sandhi because a reel from Kolkata sounded powerful. Keep Ashtami's meal, or keep the kalash. Completeness beats borrowed intensity.

What Navratri in Dubai is not

It is not a nine-day discount on every sankalp postponed since last Diwali. It is not a substitute for a matching, a katha date, or a medical decision. Some families ask me to 'do something in Navratri' for a dasha they fear. A recitation of the Devi Mahatmya — even one adhyaya a night, even over a live link with the kalash in your room — is a proper use of the fortnight. A promise that the recitation will cancel Saturn is not. I will sit with the recitation. I will not sell the cancellation.

A flight is not a sacrament. Presence is. A room in Dubai that lit the kalash on the 11th and fed a child on the 18th has kept more of the nine nights than a ticket purchased for India and a week no one sat through.

A nine nights a Gulf household can actually finish

  • 11 October, morning GST: kalash, lamp, a short sankalp that names Dubai. Barley if the sill will take it.
  • Each evening: lamp. A few names, or one page, or a recording. Stop before the building's quiet hours.
  • Friday 16 / Saturday 17: garba if that is your form, in a hall that has already been booked. Do not make the home kalash compete with a 1 a.m. dandiya.
  • Sunday 18 October: kanya puja or a meal for children; those who fast, parana as the family already does.
  • Monday 19: last evening at the kalash.
  • Tuesday 20: water on a plant; visarjan of a small murti into a bucket that then goes to a garden, not into a drain the municipality will fine. Ravana only if your circle already burns one.

What to send on WhatsApp if you want a sitting discussed

  • City: Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi — not 'UAE' alone.
  • Flat, villa or hall, and whether the building allows evening singing.
  • Whether you want only a kalash-vidhi explained, a recitation over a live link, or a travel date if the calendar allows.
  • How many children you can actually feed on Ashtami.
  • Which clock the room will use: GST.

Questions families in the UAE ask

When is Navratri 2026 in Dubai?

Sharad Navratri, on the working panchang I am using: 11 to 19 October, Dussehra 20 October. Confirm the first morning against a Dubai panchang, then do not change horses.

Does a kalash in a rented flat count?

Yes. The Devi is seated where the kalash is set with a sankalp. A city does not have to be named in the text.

Must we go to a temple or a garba ground every night?

No. A public night is one form. The home lamp is another. Missing a hall does not cancel the kalash.

Must we wear nine colours?

No. That is a bazaar custom. A clean garment and a lamp will do.

Can we start after Pitru Paksha if we were sitting for Shraddh?

Yes. The fortnight ends 10 October 2026. Ghatasthapana is the next morning. Do not mix the two sankalps on the same cloth.

Can the recitation be live from India?

Yes, if the kalash is in your room and the clock you name is GST. Travel is another form, arranged where dates allow, not promised as a package on a page.

Where does the kalash water go on Dashami?

A plant, a garden, a clean pot that then goes to earth. Not a kitchen drain, and not a public fountain.
